New London, CT ---
Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) and
Joseph Bernard (Stratham, NH) both registered victories Sunday on their way to the podium as WPI climbed the team standings to place 13th at the two-day NCAA Division III Region 1 Wrestling Tournament hosted by Coast Guard.
The Crimson and Gray totaled 37 points overall and, after entering the final day in 15th place, climbed to 13th in the final standings. Springfield captured the team title with 170.5 points. The Pride secured the championship without an individual champion and just one runner-up finish but will send six wrestlers to nationals after five Springfield grapplers won third-place bouts. Williams, which placed five in the finals, finished second with 155 points, just 2.5 points ahead of host Coast Guard.
Pavis entered Sunday with two paths to qualifying for nationals later this month in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, beginning with a semifinal matchup against top-seeded
Andrew Marchese of Castleton. The 125-pounder surrendered a takedown in each of the first two periods, falling 8-0 by major decision.
Â
He then needed two victories to secure the third and final national berth. Trailing 1-0 entering the third period against fifth-seeded
Chris Hong of Wesleyan, Pavis escaped early, recorded a takedown, added four near-fall points and ultimately secured a fall at 6:12 to stay alive.
Â
His final opportunity came in the third-place match against third-seeded
Nikko Beato of Coast Guard. Beato registered a takedown in each period en route to a 10-2 major decision to claim third place.
Â
Pavis concludes his standout senior campaign with a 24-11 record, including 10 pins, four technical falls and five major decisions.
Â
Bernard rebounded from a narrow preliminary-round loss Saturday morning to third-seeded and eventual finalist
Zach Borzio of Williams by piecing together three consecutive victories to advance to Sunday, where he needed three more wins to punch his ticket to Cedar Rapids.
Â
Sunday the 197-pounder recorded a first-period takedown of Wesleyan's
Warren Little and carried a 4-0 lead into the third. After conceding an early escape, he responded with another takedown, added near-fall points and secured a fall at 6:16.
Â
He then faced top-seeded
Josh Negron of Castleton and wrestled a tight bout before falling 4-2. In the fifth-place match, the senior dropped a 10-4 decision to fourth-seeded
Anthony Fernandez of Johnson & Wales.
Â
Bernard concludes his senior campaign with a team-best 27 victories, finishing 27-13 with seven pins, one technical fall and five major decisions.
Sunday marked the conclusion of the 2025-26 season for the Crimson and Gray. Additional victories for the Engineers came Saturday from
Trevor Bowen (Frenchtown, NJ), who recorded a pair of wins at heavyweight, and
Mason Basara (Bethlehem, PA), who notched an upset of the sixth-seeded wrestler at 149 pounds.
Â
WPI will begin the 2026-27 campaign in early November at Racich Rumble hosted by Ursinus (PA).
