Baseball Falls to UMass Dartmouth in Non-Conference Thursday Tilt

North Dartmouth, MA --- The WPI baseball team fell 9-4 on the road at UMass Dartmouth on Thursday afternoon. The loss dips the Engineers to 15-9 overall, while the Corsairs improve to 13-12-1.

Both teams tallied seven hits, but the Engineers issued six walks in the game and timely hitting from UMass Dartmouth took advantage. WPI's Jack Wildgoose (Pittsfield, MA) took the loss, throwing a third of an inning, and allowing three earned runs on two hits. Jacob Hand (Niskayuna, NY) finished 3-for-4 to lead the Engineers at the plate, driving in one run. DJ Brooks (Danvers, MA) and Jonathan Lattimer (Windsor, CT) each added RBI in the loss.

Seamus Marshall (New Bedford, MA) got the win, going five innings, allowing only one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Anthony Keefe (Plymouth, MA) picked up the save, tossing four, and giving up one run on three hits with five strikeouts.

Offensively for the Corsairs, Keefe and Brett Baker (Chelmsford, MA) each had two hits and two RBI, while Jake SanAntonio (Cranston, RI) also drove in two runs.

UMass Dartmouth jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two in the second and one in the third. In the second, Cooper Wixon (Plano, TX) doubled home the first run of the game, while a well-placed bunt from Baker drove in another. In the third, an Andrew Possi (Milton, MA) RBI single made it 3-0.

WPI tied the game with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Brooks reached on a fielder's choice that scored both Liam Keblin (Newton, MA) and Jake DelMonte (Southington, CT), while an RBI ground-out from Hand knotted the game at 3-3.

The Corsairs wasted little time answering back, putting up four runs in the bottom of the same inning, opening up a 7-3 advantage. A bases-loaded single from SanAntonio started the scoring by plating a pair, while Keefe followed with another two-RBI single to bring the hosts' advantage back to four.

UMass Dartmouth added two in the bottom of the seventh, with Keefe scoring on a wild pitch and Baker doubling in another run to make it 9-3.

WPI got a solo run in the top of the third, as Lattimer singled to score Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, NJ), but the Engineers were held scoreless the rest of the way.

Up next, WPI will host Coast Guard for a NEWMAC doubleheader on Saturday at 3pm at the New England Baseball Complex. UMass Dartmouth will play two at Vermont State on Saturday at 1pm.
