WORCESTER -- WPI received goals from four players with three others adding assists as the Engineers went down Park Ave. and across Chandler Street to defeat city foe Worcester State 4-0 in a non-conference field hockey tilt on Tuesday evening.
With the win, WPI gets back to the .500 mark on the season at 3-3 while the Lancers fall to 0-5 in 2024.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Crimson and Gray broke through with a pair of goals in the second stanza. In the 19th minute,
Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) dribbled up the field past defenders, and knocked the ball toward the goal where it met the stick of
Leah Uglevich (Maynard, MA) who tapped it in for her first goal of the season.
Just over four minutes later, the guests netted off a penalty corner. After an insertion by
Emily Sollecito (Bedford, MA) at 23:53,
Eve Martineau (Greene, ME) sent a laser from the top of the arc for a direct shot into goal, her second goal of the year.
WPI turned another penalty corner into a goal early in the third quarter. This time, Sollecito's insertion was stick-stopped by Martineau and passed to
Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT), who slipped it past the Worcester State defenders towards the far post for her first goal of the season at 35:13.
The Boynton Hillers closed out the scoring in the 54th minute.
Sophie Papamechail (Danvers, MA) had her shot saved by Lancer netminder
Madison Ferrara (Somerset, MA), but
Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA) rebounded the ball and bounced it back to Papamechail, who scored on a diving shot for the sophomore's first career goal.
WPI outshot Worcester State 27-1 and benefited from the majority of the penalty corners (18-1).
Natalya Morin (Barre, MA) accounted for the Lancers lone shot of the night.
Ella Moreau (Huntington, MA) and
Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) split the shutout in net for the Engineers with Moreau logging the first three quarters and Lakin coming on for the final 15 minutes. Ferrara posted an impressive 18 saves for the Lancers.
Both teams begin conference play Saturday on the road at 11am. WPI ventures to South Hadley to compete again Mount Holyoke while Worcester State battles Westfield State in a MASCAC tilt.
