WORCESTER --
Adrian Trott (Devonshire, Bermuda) and
Micah Valadez Bush (Laguna Hills, CA) each netted a second half goal as the visiting Amherst men's soccer team broke open a scoreless match at intermission to defeat nationally-ranked WPI in a non-conference contest played Tuesday evening.
Â
Amherst, which had been ranked number one in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 last week, was surprisingly unranked when the latest poll was released earlier Tuesday after the Mammoths (3-1) dropped a tight 1-0 road loss to archrival Williams last weekend. The Engineers, who are also ranked third in the most recent Region II poll, are now 5-2 on the season.
Â
After neither squad denting the scoring column in opening 45 minutes, Amherst took advantage of a miscue when WPI failed to clear a ball that fell to Trott who buried his first goal of the season at 52:17.Â
The Mammoths doubled up 8:29 to go.Â
Jacob Dinzeo (Stillwater, MN) took a pass and then fed Valadez Bush for a nifty header to doom the Engineers.
Â
Amherst outshot the hosts, 16-8, while the corner kicks taken were even, 4-4.
Â
Julian Quaresima (East Meadow, NY) was in goal for the Engineers, recording seven saves on the night. For the Mammoths,
Trey Sheppard (Columbus, OH) earned the shutout with three stops.Â
Â
Both squads are back in action on Saturday with home conference matchups versus nationally-ranked team at 1pm. WPI opens up NEWMAC play at home against #20 Babson in a rematch of last year's NEWMAC Tournament championship match, while Amherst returns home to face #2 Middlebury in a NESCAC affair.
