Vaz Notches Goal for Men’s Soccer in 1-1 NEWMAC Battle at Emerson

Boston, MA --- WPI's Aaron Vaz (Medford, MA) recorded the game-tying marker for the Engineers in a 1-1 result at Emerson in a Saturday afternoon matchup on Rotch Field.

With the result, the Crimson and Gray sit at 6-2-2 with an 0-0-2 mark in NEWMAC play as the Lions are 2-5-2 and 0-1-1 in league action.

An Emerson corner led to Cassidy Vigo (Culver City, CA) connecting with Dominic Reiter (Pittsburgh, PA) with a chip into the box where Reiter headed a ball back off the left post that knocked back to the right side of the goal for the go-ahead marker just 6:37 into the contest.

Just 8:08 later, Brady Burch (South Deerfield, MA) corralled a balled in the corner that was knocked away by an Emerson defender as Vaz fired off a rocket past the keeper into the near side of the goal for the equalizer.

The Engineers and Lions continued to exchange shots as Emerson's Thomas Pelino (San Jose, CA) rattled of two strikes with alternating shots by Matthew Biando (Atlanta, GA) and Vaz but the match stayed deadlocked at one goal apiece heading into the break.

In the second half, the Crimson and Gray registered five shots on target combined by Biando, Mike Montabana (Jamison, PA), and Jason Hrkach (Lexington, MA) all steered clear by Wylie Jelinek (Brooklyn, NY) to keep the match tied. Liam Wendel (Camas, WA) and Thomas were the only members of the Lions to record shots on frame in the second half but were also unable to find the back of the net as time expired resulting in the tie.

Julian Quaresima (Long Meadow, MA) logged five saves on the afternoon as his counterpart Jelinek accumulated half a dozen stops during the excursion.

Both teams step out of conference for their next contest. WPI ventures to Roger Williams for a 7pm Tuesday matchup. Emerson remains on its home field next, competing against Westfield State in a 6pm contest on Tuesday.
