Women's Basketball Races Past Mount Holyoke in Harrington to Collect NEWMAC Win

WORCESTER -- Emmy Allyn (Rutland, MA) and Caitlyn Dasaro (Fairfield, VT) combined for 29 points as 11 different Engineers netted baskets en route to a 64-29 conference victory against visiting Mount Holyoke on Wednesday evening inside Harrington Auditorium.

WPI improves to 8-10 on the year and 1-3 in conference play while Mount Holyoke falls to 4-14 overall and 0-4 in NEWMAC action.

The game got off to a fast start as both teams exchanged three-pointers early as Alex Twomey (Nutley, NJ) for the Lyons and Alice Kelly (Wethersfield, CT) for the Engineers connected from downtown. The hosts then went on a run, with Emmy Allyn (Rutland, MA) scoring back-to-back layups to push the lead to 7-3 with 6:32 remaining in the first quarter. Ava Giansiracusa (Wethersfield, CT) added to the momentum, hitting both free throws, grabbing a rebound, and finishing with a driving layup to extend the lead to 13-5 with just over two minutes to go. As the first quarter closed, WPI held a 17-5 lead, with Allyn and Kelly teaming up for 11 of those points.

The second quarter saw a continued lead for the Engineers, with Caitlyn Dasaro (Fairfield, VT) adding six points to the board, while both Allyn and Giansiracusa chipped in with five points each. The Lyons closed out the half with a late push, as Emma Zoubok (Somers, NY) drained a three-pointer, but Giansiracusa responded with a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line, bringing the score to 36-11 in favor of WPI at the break.

Allyn leads the Engineers in scoring with 10 points and two boards. Giansiracusa contributed nine points, and Megan Stone (Hanson, MA) grabbed four rebounds and three points. For Mount Holyoke, Twomey tallied five points and two assists. Zoubok added three points and Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, ME) grabbed three boards.

The third quarter saw more of the same play from the Engineers, with Dasaro adding another eight points to her tally, including a smooth layup off a steal by Paige Davenport (Albany, NY) at 4:51. Both teams struggled to find the basket, as no points were scored from 3:38 until the end of the quarter. As the buzzer sounded, the score stood at 50-11, with WPI in the advantage.

Femke Jansen (North Granby, CT) kicked off the fourth quarter with a bang, sinking two quick three-pointers within the first three minutes. Mount Holyoke responded with a burst of offense from McGonagle, who scored two layups and a jumper in just a 2:25 minute span. Twomey followed suit for the Lyons, hitting both free throws and then converting a layup on the next possession. With just under five minutes left in the game, the score stood at 56-21 with WPI in the advantage.

The Lyons had one final push, scoring three field goals on back-to-back possessions while keeping WPI off the board during that stretch. Despite the effort, the game ended with a final score of 64-29 in favor of the Engineers.

Allyn and Dasaro led the Engineers, netting 15 and 14 respectively and each added two assists while Giansiracusa chipped in with nine points and four rebounds. For the Lyons, Twomey tallied double digits in scoring with 11 and secured four boards and Sofia Francisco (Boston, MA) grabbed a game-high eight boards and added four points.

WPI shot 46.2% (24-of-52) of field goals while the Lyons were held to 12-of-47 (25.5%) shooting from the floor. The Engineers held the advantage in bench points, 25-3, and points off turnovers, 27-6.

The two teams continue with NEWMAC play on Saturday. WPI welcomes Babson for a 2pm affair while Mount Holyoke entertains MIT for a 1pm game.
