Field Hockey Erupts in Second Half for Comeback Victory over Mount Holyoke on Senior Day

WORCESTER --- WPI Field Hockey registered three goals in the second half en route to the 3-1 comeback NEWMAC win over Mount Holyoke on Senior Day at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.

With the win, the Engineers moved to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in NEWMAC play as the Lyons drop to 4-8 and 0-5 in conference action.

Before the contest, the Engineers recognized Eve Martineau (Greene, ME), Leah Uglevich (Maynard, MA), Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA), Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA), Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT), Shannon Miranda (Winchester, MA) and Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) as seniors of the Crimson and Gray program.

The visiting Lyons struck first midway through the second quarter when sophomore MJ Owens (Fairfield, CT) found the back of the cage off assists from first-year Zoey Candito (Belchertown, MA) and junior Mackenzie Hillman (Newington, CT) to give Mount Holyoke a 1-0 lead despite trailing in shots (6-14) heading into the break.

WPI responded after the break and took advantage of two yellow cards for Mount Holyoke as first-year Tatiana Nwosu (Houston, TX) provided the equalizer in the 42nd minute after redirecting a shot from Meinhold after registering seven shots in the third quarter alone. The Crimson and Gray then kicked off the fourth quarter with a goal just 39 seconds in from Martineau who connected on a ball from Meinhold to go ahead in the match.

Uglevich secured the insurance goal at 51:50 as she picked off a Mount Holyoke pass and outpaced the Lyons defense on the breakaway finish as the Engineers secured the 3-1 win.

WPI controlled the pace throughout, outshooting the Lyons 28-6 (19-6 on goal) and holding a 16-7 edge in penalty corners. Mount Holyoke senior goalkeeper Ainsley Gruener (Topsfield, MA) made 15 saves in a strong effort, while sophomore Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) turned away four shots in the win for the Engineers.

The Engineers will close out its non-conference slate with a trip to New London, Connecticut, to square off with Conn College at 7pm. Mount Holyoke will take a break from action until next Saturday as the Lyons will host Springfield at 12pm.
