Castro Collects NEWMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week Citation

Josh Castro - NEWMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week
Marlboro, MA — WPI Football graduate student Josh Castro (Pittsburgh, PA) was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 5th.

The other NEWMAC football honorees for the week were Broock Desta of Coast Guard as the Offensive Athlete of the Week and Tyler Sordillo of Springfield as the Defensive Athlete of the Week.

Castro delivered a strong performance in all three phases of the game in WPI's 14-7 road victory at Norwich on Saturday. As the Engineers' punter, he launched nine punts for an average of 48 yards, including a school-record 94-yard punt. Entering the weekend ranked fifth in Division III in punting average, Castro continued his elite production with three punts of 50 yards or more and three downed inside the Cadets' 20-yard line.

Castro also showed his versatility by turning a muffed snap into a first down conversion late in the fourth quarter and, as a wide receiver, caught the game-winning touchdown with just 48 seconds remaining as he finished the day with six receptions for 75 yards, leading all players in both categories.

This marks the first career NEWMAC weekly honor for Castro and the second special teams accolade this season for the Crimson and Gray, joining first-year kicker Nathan Napier (Natick, MA) who earned the nod two weeks ago.

The Engineers (2-3, 1-1 NEWMAC) are idle this upcoming weekend and return to action on Saturday, October 18th, when they host Springfield in a conference matchup at Alumni Stadium.
