Women’s Swimming and Diving Finishes Second in Revamped Worcester City Championships

Kate Creusere
WORCESTER -- The Engineers of the Women's Swimming and Diving team posted strong results at the newly formatted Worcester City Championships. Playing hosts to fellow Worcester based programs Holy Cross (DI), Assumption (DII) and Clark (NEWMAC – DIII), the team produced multiple top 10 finishes in the three pentathlons.

Swimmers either contested a pentathlon consisting of the 100 IM and four 50s of stroke, a pentathlon consisting of the 200 IM and four 100s of stroke or a pentathlon consisting of the 400 IM and four 200s of stroke.

WPI posted three top five finishes in the longest of three pentathlons and sophomores Allie Marvell (Nashua, NH) and Kaelin Harren (Norton, MA) bookend first year Amber Jacobs (Cedar Falls, IA) who finished 4th overall. The trio started the day off with a 3-4-5 finish in the 400 IM, with Marvell's 4:56.94 PB leading the way. Marvell seemed to enjoy her 3rd place finish as her 2:21.96 in the 200 fly earned her 3rd place points as well. Jacobs and Harren were not too far back with the pair touching in 6th and 7th with times of 2:34.09 and 2:42.54.

The 200 backstroke saw the trio back together at 3rd, 4th and 5th as Marvell once again collected the bronze with her 2:22.35. Unsurprisingly, the trio stayed in the same order in both the 200 breaststroke and 200 freestyle with Marvell leading the way but followed closely by both Jacobs and Harren. Marvell finished with an overall time of 14:37.69 with Jacobs at 15:04.22 and Harren at 16:05.10.

Jacobs was not the lone first year to post a top ten finish in their respective pentathlons as both Mallory LaPointe (Saint Johns, FL) and Audrey Cook (Wakefield, MA) joined her there. LaPointe placed 3rd overall in the middle-distanced pentathlon (200 IM and 100s) with an overall time of 6:31.76, 16 seconds off the winning time of 6:15.09. Cook's 6:47.89 earned her 10th place, less than half a second clear of 11th. LaPointe finished 4th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.36, while Cook was 11th at 2:22.04, a full second faster than she was last weekend, and two seconds ahead of her time a fortnight ago.

LaPointe made a strong move up the leaderboard in the 100 fly with a 2nd place finish, as her 1:01.00 was just .26 away from tying the fastest time. Joining her in posting top 10 time in the fly were sophomore Kate Creusere (Las Cruces, NM) and Kaitlyn Grove (Chesire, CT) who went 1:03.34 and 1:04.26 to finish 8th and 10th in the event. LaPointe posted her 3rd straight top five finish in the 100 back as she hit the wall in 1:03.13, which was good for 4th overall. While the Florida native was the lone Engineer in the top 10 in the backstroke, three of her compatriots fought there way into the pack in the 100 breaststroke.

Leading the way was sophomore Milena Whitney (Bedford, NH) whose 1:11.63 was good for 5th overall. She was just ahead of Cook, who touched in 6th place with her 1:12.25. Also sneaking into the top 10 was Niamh O'Sullivan (Basking Ridge, NJ) whose 1:14.63 was good for 8th overall. Lapointe jumped back to near the top of the field in the 100 free as she posted the 3rd fastest time in the field, going 55.83. Joining her near the top was junior Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME) who earned 6th with a 57.74, and Creusere who tied for 8th at 58.19.

The blink and you'll miss it pentathlon consisting of the 100 IM and four 50s of stroke saw the Engineers place another pair into the top 10 as sophomore Sarah Kang (Richmond, VA) was just three seconds shy of the win, with her 2:58.55 cumulative time earning her 2nd overall. Senior Rachel Tsang (Acton, MA), made her season debut a success as she posted the 9th fastest cumulative time of 3:11.22. Like in the longest pentathlon, Kang and Tsang's finishes in the 100 IM were an omen of their overall finish as Kang touched 2nd in 1:03.23, while Tsang's 1:07.00 was good for 9th. Kang collected another 2nd in the 50 fly with her 26.79, while Tsang jumped up to 4th, thanks to her 28.46. Joining the pair in the top 10 was Tsang classmate, Alessandra Giovenco (Alexandria, VA) who hit the wall in 10th with a time of 30.27.

Both Kang and Tsang improved one place in the 50 back, with Kang claiming top honors thanks to her 28.12, the lone time under 29.00 in the entire field. Tsang, posted just one of the four sub –30 times as her 29.53 was good for the 3rd spot on the podium. The pair fell a little in the breastroke, with Kang's 34.79 (7th) leading the way for the Engineers, but she was joined by Giovenco with a top 10 finish, as the Virgina native earned a 9th place finish with her 35.00. Kang and Tsang bounced back in the final event of the meet, the 50 free, with Kang taking yet another 2nd place, courtesy of her 25.62. Tsang too rebounded after the breaststroke going 27.10, which was good for 7th place.

WPI finds itself in action again Friday as they host the Southern Connecticut Owls in a meet slated to start at 6pm.
