Josh Castro-AFCA All-America-WPI Football-2025

Castro Collects America Football Coaches Association All-America First Team Citation

AFCA All-America - Josh Castro
Waco, TX --- WPI Football graduate student Josh Castro (Pittsburgh, PA) was selected to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America First Team for Special Teams as announced by the association on Wednesday.

The first and second team features 12 offensive, 11 defensive and three special teams honorees.

The graduate student punter-wide receiver combo continues to earn postseason recognition as Castro has put together a breakout stint in which he earned two postseason citations from the NEWMAC, All-Conference First Team as a punter and Second Team as a wide receiver, marking the first all-conference accolades of his career.

Castro led the charge of the Engineers' special teams unit with one of the finest punting seasons in program history as he totaled 2,675 yards on the year and averaged 44.6 yards per punt, including a school-record and career-long 94-yard punt. The graduate student delivered 20 punts of 50+ yards, dropped 22 attempts inside the 20, and registered seven touchbacks and seven fair catches across nine games. The Pittsburgh native logged vital snaps on offense and compiled 36 receptions for 435 yards, including a season-long 38-yard grab and a 110-yard, one-touchdown performance in WPI's 15-13 road victory at Husson. Additionally, Castro averaged 12.1 yards per catch and added two receiving touchdowns, plus 22 yards on the ground for the Crimson and Gray.

Selection Process: The AFCA's Division III All-America Selection Committee is made up of head coaches representing each conference from each of the AFCA's seven districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts prior to a conference call between the district chairmen and the committee chairman on which the team is chosen.

Members of the AFCA Coaches' All-America First Team will receive a plaque commemorating their selection to the team, while members of the Second Team will receive a certificate.
