Women’s Basketball Drops Florida Sunshine Shootout Opener to Nationally-Ranked Carroll

Daytona Beach, FL --- WPI Women's Basketball dropped a 48-64 result to nationally-ranked Carroll in the Florida Sunshine Shootout held at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach on late Friday night.

The Engineers dip to 5-3 overall as the Pioneers, ranked 21 in the most recent Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) NCAA Division III Coaches' Poll, improve to 8-2 on the season.

Carroll jumped out to a fast start with a good three-pointer by Emilie Wizner (Germantown, WI) in response to an Ava Hyams (Kearny, NJ) layup that opened the scoring for the contest. The Pioneers had four different scorers as the Engineers misfired on six of their next seven attempts as Hyams knocked down a jumper later, but Carroll held a 15-4 advantage after the first quarter of action.

Leila Nielsen (New York, NY) and Emmy Allyn (Rutland, MA) kicked off the second quarter with a pair of back-to-back trifectas. Carroll turned defense into offense and rattled off four-consecutive fastbreak layups to hold a 28-10 lead as WPI's Delaney MacPhetres (Amherst, MA) posted back-to-back layups to stay within reach. The Pioneers then responded with four straight makes featuring seven straight points from Natalie Gricius (Oconomowoc, WI) to push the margin as an Ava Giansiracusa(Whethersfield, CT) three-pointer kept the Engineers within 20 nearing the end of the first half.

Allyn and Giansiracusa accounted for the opening nine points of the third quarter to stay toe-to-toe with Carroll as three-pointers from Wizner and Kacy Kratz (Hartford, WI) helped maintain the commanding lead for the Pioneers. Allyn registered another three to kick off a spurt for the Crimson and Gray as Femke Jansen (North Granby, CT) knocked down a trey, Hyams layup, a pair Giansiracusa free throws and a good Corinn Ouellette (Trumbull, CT) jumper quickly brought WPI to within 16 with 2:44 remaining. The final surge was insurmountable as the Pioneers held off WPI despite the Engineers outscoring Carroll 15-9 in the final quarter of action.

On the night, Allyn posted a team-high 14 points on 50% shooting from beyond the arc as Giansiracusa chipped in with nine points and four boards and Hyams recorded six points and six assists. Carroll's Gricius registered the game-high 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field.

Both squads turn to Sunday as WPI will face Maine Maritime at 11am in its final tilt in the Sunshine State as the Pioneers will tango with Washington and Lee at 1pm.
