WORCESTER -- The 12th Annual Gompei Invitational continued Saturday at the Sports and Recreation Center, where WPI collected 23 top five finishes, including event wins from junior Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA) and sophomores Angad Ahluwalia (Attleboro, MA) and Tom Fitzgerald (East Longmeadow, MA). The Engineers remain on top of the overall team standings with 6,658 points after today's action.
WPI is followed by Bentley (3,425.5), Saint Peter's (2,957), Sacred Heart (2,463), Brandeis (2,350), Springfield (2,249.5), Merrimack (1,734.5), Central Connecticut (1,678.5), and Clark (1,099) in the combined point totals.
Saturday's finals action started in the morning with a pair of mixed relays and five overall top five finishes for the Engineers. WPI teams took three of the top five spots in the Mixed 200 Yard Free Relay, led by the "A" team of junior Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD), Ahluwalia, sophomore Sarah Kang (Richmond, VA), and freshman Mallory LaPointe (Saint Johns, FL), who finished second, just .10 behind the winners, combining for a time of 1:31.50. The "B" squad of sophomore Angelo Reade (Newburgh, NY), Schlessman, freshman Madison Harris (Upper Marlboro, MD), and junior Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME) were fourth in 1:33.41, followed closely by the "C" team of sophomore Nick Braun (Portland, OR), junior Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA), senior Kaitlyn Grove (Cheshire, CT), and freshman Audrey Cook (Wakefield, MA) in 1:34.48.
The other morning relay saw the Engineers take fourth and fifth in the Mixed 400 Yard Medley. Senior Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA), Cook, senior Nikita Zuev (Wallingford, CT), and LaPointe were the first Crimson and Gray team to touch the wall, as the "A" effort went 3:52.62. The "B" relay of junior Ryan Ng (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ), sophomore Alia Ureta (Hackensack, NJ), Kang, and Ahluwalia were fifth in 3:53.47.
In the 400 IM, freshman Lucas Brown (Viera, FL), freshman Deion Chung (Honolulu, HI), and junior Daniel Cory (Reading, MA) all took top-10 placements. Brown led the way with a runner-up finish in 4:04.91, followed by Chung in seventh (4:16.05) and Cory in ninth (4:23.78).
In the 100 Yard Back, WPI placed five swimmers inside the top 10. Doubek and Smith shared third place in 52.58, while Ahluwalia followed closely in fifth with a 52.59. Junior Andrew Van De Water (Stratham, NH) added an eighth-place showing in 53.47, and junior Lucas Pralle (Wayland, MA) rounded out the group in ninth at 53.94. On the women's side, Kang secured seventh overall in the 100 Back, touching in 59.28.
Three Engineers earned top-10 placements in the 50 Yard Fly. Braun led the WPI contingent with a sixth-place finish in 24.28, joined by Pralle in eighth (24.48) and Reade in ninth (24.56). In the women's 50 Fly, Kang returned to the pool and recorded an eighth-place time of 26.68.
WPI's first win of the evening came in the 200 Yard Free, where Schlessman topped the field in 1:42.21. Senior Gavin McCullough (Colorado Springs, CO) followed with a fourth-place finish in 1:43.66, and Doubek added a 10th-place showing in 1:50.76. Lapointe then delivered a top-10 effort of her own, taking seventh in the women's 200 Free with a time of 1:58.08.
The Engineers dominated the 50 Yard Back, sweeping the top three positions. Ahluwalia claimed the victory in 24.34, followed by Van De Water in second (24.64) and freshman Kuba Latawiec (Newington, CT) in third (25.09). Freshman Brendon Watson (Westwood, MA) placed sixth in 25.78, and freshman Samuel Walden (Windham, NH) added another top-10 finish, taking 10th in 27.34. On the women's side, Kang and sophomore Maria Korneva (Boylston, MA) went sixth and seventh, posting times of 27.82 and 27.91, respectively.
Five more Engineers finished inside the top 10 in the 100 Yard Breast. Sophomore Tyson Elliott (Portland, OR) led the WPI performers with a fourth-place 59.14, followed by Schlessman in fifth (59.40) and sophomore Mohammad Eissa (Cairo, Egypt) in sixth (59.54). First-year teammates freshman Luke Vipond (Mahtomedi, MN) and freshman Kyle Sundberg (East Northport, NY) tied for seventh, each touching the wall at 59.90. Cook wrapped the individual swimming events for WPI with a seventh-place finish in the women's 100 Breast, going 1:08.79.
On the board, Fitzgerald earned WPI another individual win, topping the field on the 3-meter board. He posted a score of 373.45, while first-year Aaron Lakin (Hamden, CT) added a third-place finish with a score of 249.70.
Closing Saturday's action with the 400 Medley Relay, the Engineers had three men's teams in the top five. The "A" relay finished second in 3:28.56, with splits from Ahluwalia, Elliott, Smith, and Schlessman. The "B" team of Van De Water, Vipond, Pralle, and Tesoro placed fourth in 3:32.48 and the "C" relay was fifth in 3:32.76 with Watson, Sundberg, Brown, and Reade competing. The women's "A" squad notched an eighth-place finish, as Korneva, Cook, Kang, and Lapointe teamed up for a time of 4:03.45.
The Gompei Invitational wraps up Sunday, with preliminaries beginning at 9am, followed by diving and evening finals starting at 5:30pm.
