Cambridge, MA ---
Ava Giansiracusa (Wethersfield, CT) poured in 11 points for the WPI women's basketball team, that raced out to a first quarter lead but was unable to hold it as the seventh-seeded Crimson and Gray were defeated by sixth-seeded and host MIT 60-33 Friday evening in a NEWMAC Tournament semifinal matchup inside Rockwell Cage.
With the result, both teams sport identical 13-14 records. MIT will advance to Sunday's NEWMAC title game at top-seeded and ninth-ranked Smith with tip-off slated for 1pm. It marked the end of the season for
Cherise Galasso's WPI squad and the final career game of three starters including senior
Caitlyn Dasaro (Fairfield, VT) and graduate students
Shannon Reno (Millbury, MA) and
Alice Kelly (Wethersfield, CT). Dasaro netted six points and Reno grabbed five rebounds while Kelly, who played 40 minutes and led the team in scoring and assists in Wednesday's quarterfinal victory at Babson, only played the opening two minutes before leaving with an injury.
