Northboro, MA --- WPI baseball exploded for 13 runs on a dominant offensive performance to defeat Roger Williams on Tuesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex. The Engineers improve to 7-3 overall, while the Hawks dip to 3-7.
Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, NJ) led the WPI offense, going 2-for-5 with a three-run home run.
Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and
Jacob Wiberg (Exeter, NH) also had three hits, including a pair of doubles.
Matt Shea (Andover, MA) contributed two hits, two RBIs, and three runs scored, while
Chuck Cappello (Southboro, MA) and
Zachary Roethlein (Pomfret Center, CT) each added an RBI extra-base hit.
On the mound,
Luke Blandino (Eden, NY) earned the win with six dominant innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out eight.
Michael Domino (Marlboro, MA) tossed a pair of scoreless innings of relief whileÂ
Alex Foss (Sandwich, MA) closed the game with a scoreless ninth inning to secure the victory.
Will Florio (San Jose, CA) provided the lone RBI for Roger Williams, going 2-for-2 with a double.
Griffin Ruffner (Exeter, NH) scored the Hawks' only run, while
Noah Hester (Old Saybrook, CT) added a hit in the ninth. On the mound,
Evan Beattie (Saunderstown, RI) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits over two innings.
WPI jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Cash reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Wiberg for the game's first run. Later in the inning, a failed pickoff attempt allowed Shea to score on a throwing error, and
Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, NY) doubled to left center to plate Cash, giving the Engineers a 3-0 advantage.
Roger Williams got on the board in the second when Florio doubled to right field, scoring Ruffner to make it 3-1.
WPI answered in the bottom half with a pair of two-run doubles. Shea lined a shot down the right-field line to bring in
Liam Keblin (Newton, MA) and Wiberg, and Cash followed with a double of his own, scoring Shea and Burns to extend the lead to 7-1.
In the third, Roethlein launched a solo home run to left field as the WPI lead bulged to 8-1.
The Engineers tacked on three more in the fifth when Burns crushed a three-run homer to left center, bringing home Shea and Keblin to make it 11-1.
WPI added two more runs in the eighth. Cappello doubled down the left-field line to score Roethlein, and a throwing error by Roger Williams allowed
Matt Robison (Wrentham, MA) to score, pushing the lead to 13-1
Foss pitched a scoreless ninth inning, working around a pinch-hit leadoff single from Hester, to seal the victory.
WPI next plays on Thursday at Suffolk in a 3:30pm game. Roger Williams returns to action tomorrow at UMass Dartmouth at 3pm.
