Northboro, MA --- A nine-run second inning propelled visiting Wheaton to a 15-5 victory over WPI in seven innings in a NEWMAC baseball matchup Tuesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex. The Engineers fall to 10-9 (0-2 NEWMAC) while the Lyons improve to 11-8 (3-1 NEWMAC).
Jonathan Lattimer (Windsor, CT) led the WPI offense, going 2-for-2 with three RBI, while
Chuck Cappello (Southboro, MA) added three hits and drove in a run.
Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA) collected two hits and scored twice, and
Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, NY) chipped in an RBI single.
Jacob Wiberg (Exeter, NH) took the loss for WPI, allowing eight runs (seven earned) over 1.1 innings.
Dominic Monico (Litchfield, NH) logged 4.2 innings in relief, striking out four while allowing six runs (only two earned).
Wheaton's offense was led by
Timmy Wagner (Hingham, MA), who went 4-for-5 with a home run, double, and two RBI.
Kevin Matos (Lawrence, MA) added a grand slam and totaled four RBI, while
Shawn Cali (East Taunton, MA) hit a three-run homer.
Casey Wensley (Raynham, MA) had three hits and an RBI, and
Tyler Bellan (Franklin, MA) added a hit and an RBI.
Ben Oliveira (Somerset, MA) earned the win for the Lyons, going five innings and allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out three.
Liam Goldthwaite (Braintree, MA) and
Evan Mello (New Bedford, MA) each tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
The scoring opened in the top of the first when
Robbie Lamond (North Kingstown, RI) came home on a fielding error to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead. WPI answered quickly in the bottom half as Lattimer delivered a two-run single to right center, plating
Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, NJ) and Wiberg for a 2-1 edge.
Wheaton took control in the second, sending 13 batters to the plate. Cali's three-run homer to center kicked off the frame, followed by an RBI single from Wensley and a ground-rule double by Wagner. Matos capped the inning with a grand slam to right, pushing the lead to 10-2.
The Lyons tacked on three more runs in the third, aided by a dropped fly ball that allowed two runs to score, and a Bellan RBI single. Another WPI miscue in the fifth let Wagner score, extending the margin to 14-2.
WPI rallied for three in the fifth. Lattimer brought home Burns with a sacrifice fly, Zawacki knocked in Cash with a single, and Cappello followed with an RBI single to score Zawacki, making it 14-5. Wheaton's Wagner then answered with a solo home run in the seventh to complete the scoring.
WPI returns to action Thursday, hosting Wentworth in non-conference play at 3:30pm in Northboro. Wheaton is back home Wednesday for a 3:30pm contest against Worcester State.
