Burns and WPI Walk Off with Comeback Victory Over Wentworth

Northboro, MA --- A walk-off single from Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, NJ) capped a thrilling rally as WPI baseball scored in each of the final five innings to defeat Wentworth 5-4 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex. The Engineers improve to 11-9 on the season, while the Leopards drop to 6-14.

WPI was led offensively by Burns, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a game-tying solo homer in the eighth and the walk-off base knock in the ninth. Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA) added a solo home run to tie the game earlier in the sixth, while James DiGiovanni (Kennebunk, ME) added an RBI. Chuck Cappello (Southboro, MA) reached base three times and scored twice. Brian Riley (Portland, ME) earned the win in relief, tossing a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.

Wentworth saw solid performances from Devon Lapierre (Dover, NH), who reached base three times and scored twice, and Jake Samela (West Hartford, CT), who collected two hits and drove in a run. Mike Sibert (Billerica, MA) also added two hits and scored. Brandon Farinas (Lewiston, ME) took the loss after surrendering the unearned run in the ninth.

The Leopards struck first, scoring in the second inning on a groundout by Cyle Archer (Chester, NH) that plated Christian Roncal (Glendale, AZ), who reached on a hit-by-pitch. Wentworth extended its lead to 2-0 in the third, when Lapierre stole home on a well-executed double-steal.

WPI chipped away at the lead in the fifth, capitalizing on a balk to plate Cappello. In the sixth, Cash knotted the score with a solo blast to left center. However, Wentworth responded in the top of the seventh with two runs as Samela singled in a run, and Lapierre later scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2.

The Engineers answered right back in the bottom half of the seventh. DiGiovanni singled to right, scoring Cappello, and both he and the baserunner advanced multiple bases on a fielding error, allowing Cappello and DiGiovanni to score and trim the deficit to 4-3.

In the eighth, Burns launched a solo shot to left center, pulling WPI even once more.

Riley worked around a pair of base hits in the top of the ninth inning, getting the final batter of the frame by strikeout. In the bottom half, following a throwing error and a sac bunt, pinch runner Miles Pratt (Hampton, NH) advanced to third and came home on Burns' single to right for the walk-off win.

WPI returns to action on Friday with a NEWMAC doubleheader at MIT, now rescheduled to begin at 3:30pm. Wentworth is back on the diamond Tuesday, April 8, for a conference match-up at Curry College, first pitch set for 3pm.
