Coutu Bags Lone Goal as Field Hockey Blanks University of New England to Improve to 2-0 in 2025

Biddeford, ME --- Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) scored as time expired at the end of the first half to deliver the only goal of the afternoon as WPI went on the road and blanked host University of New England 1-0 in a non-conference field hockey matchup on Sunday.

Both teams had posted clean sheets in their respective season-opening road games on Friday.  The Engineers are now 2-0 in the campaign while UNE dips to 1-1 on the season.

The Nor'easters came out with a burst to start the contest.  After an early WPI shot in the opening minutes, the hosts rattled of five straight penalty corners and attempted what proved to be two of their three shots on the day but could not dent the scoring column.  From there it was nearly all Crimson and Gray as the Engineers accounted for 20 of the game's last 21 shots and 15 of the match's final 16 corners.

The guests had an initial push at the ending of the opening stanza before the second period settled into a game played in the midfield and remained scoreless.  WPI then made a charge just prior to halftime that featured six penalty corners and seven shots over the final 2:41, culminating in a goal at the 30:00 mark when Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) knocked home a ball following a shot off the stick of Madeline Chase (Danvers, MA) for the senior's first goal of the season and second of her career.

WPI kept the pressure on throughout the second half, allowing just one shot after intermission, none over the final 23:46 and not conceding a corner in either 15-minute session.  Goalkeeper Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) picked up the Engineers second shutout in as many games to start the season with a pair of saves.  UNE netminder Micaela Jacobs (Waterboro, ME) made 10 stops for the Nor'easters while Savanna Harvey (Cumberland, ME) delivered a second-quarter defensive save for the hosts.

Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) led the Boynton Hillers offensive attack with five shots while Chase and Maine native Eve Martineau (Greene, ME) both launched four shots and Coutu contributed three off the bench.

In a scheduling oddity, both teams next have road games on Wednesday at nationally-ranked NESCAC opponents.  WPI closes out a three-game season-ending road trip by venturing to No. 13 Wesleyan for a 6:30pm contest while UNE remains in Maine and heads to Brunswick for a 7pm date with No. 24 Bowdoin.
