WORCESTER --- An 83rd-minute strike from Skidmore's
Dylan Moore (Floral Park, NY) proved decisive as the Thoroughbreds edged WPI 2-1 in non-conference men's soccer on Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium. The win improves Skidmore to 3-1-2, while the Engineers dip to 2-2-2.
Skidmore opened the scoring in the 18th minute when
Jacob Humienny (Farmington, CT) converted from the top of the box after a give-and-go sequence that began with
Jed Dougherty (Natick, MA) and was officially assisted by Moore. WPI nearly responded minutes later when
Nathan Araujo (Holliston, MA) forced a save in the 19th minute and
Jason Hrkach (Lexington, MA) sent an attempt high in the 27th.
WPI equalized in the 66th minute. Off a free kick from
Noah Amorim (Weymouth, MA),
Mike Montabana (Jamison, PA) collected the service and slipped a pass to
Fabio Bastida-Andreu (Logrono, Spain), who netted his first goal of the season.
The Thoroughbreds reclaimed the lead in the 83rd minute when
Colin Goodhines (Longmeadow, MA) set up Moore for the match-winner. WPI nearly drew level again, but Skidmore goalkeeper
Will Devall (Shoreham, NY) made a diving save on a header from
Evan Haas (Concord, NH) in the final minute.
Skidmore held a 15-11 advantage in shots and a 10-6 edge in shots on goal, while WPI led 7-6 in corners. Goalkeeper
Floris Huiskers (Amsterdam, Netherlands) recorded eight saves for WPI, while Devall finished with five stops for Skidmore.
Both teams will now look ahead to their conference openers. The Engineers go on the road for NEWMAC action at MIT on Saturday, September 20 at 3:30pm. Skidmore next plays on Tuesday, September 23 at Union in 7pm Liberty League action.
