Huiskers, Defense Shine for Men's Soccer in Scoreless Tie in NEWMAC Opener at MIT

Cambridge, MA --- Floris Huiskers (Amsterdam, Netherlands) collected six saves in net for WPI as the Crimson and Gray men's soccer opened up NEWMAC play with a 0-0 scoreless draw versus host MIT on a sun-soaked Saturday afternoon on Roberts Field.

The results keeps WPI level on the year at 2-2-3 and 0-0-1 in conference action while MIT moves to 2-3-2 on the season and 0-0-1 in NEWMAC play.

The best scoring chance from either team came with time winding down in the first half as the shot by Dilin Meloni (Needham, MA) rang just off the far post as the half ended tied at zero.

Eric Ye (Cary, NC) had a good look early in the second half but sailed his shot wide of the goal. Woods Windham (Greer, SC) had a chance for the Engineers at 58:29 but Huiskers made the save to keep MIT off the board.   The visiting Engineers WPI went down the field where Mike Montabana (Jamison, PA) saw his shot turned away by Paolo Mangiafico (Farmington, CT) at 60:13.

Mangiafico got caught out of the net as WPI had a wide-open goal with a chance to take the lead, but Charles Lai (Providence, RI) raced to the goal and turned away the WPI shot attempt.  Windham saw another scoring chance turned away by Huiskers, and a shot at 88:30 by Keegan Harrison (Melbourne, FL) rang off the post.  After a late yellow on the home team, WPI had a chance to win the game on the free kick, but the attempt was not successful as the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

Huiskers turned away six shots to earn his first clean sheet in a WPI uniform.  The senior had seven shutouts in his two seasons with Cornell (IA) as a freshman and a sophomore.  Mangiafico mustered three stops for the hosts as MIT held a 12-9 edge in shots while WPI had a slight 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.  Fabio Bastida-Andreu (Logroño Spain) and Edward Zazzali (Nutley, NJ) both notched multiple shots for the Boynton Hillers.
