Kaden Francillon (Medford, MA) and
Nikolas Previte (Andover, MA) netted second half goals as the WPI men's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat host Wentworth 2-1 in a non-conference matchup on New Sweeney Field on Tuesday evening.
The victory snapped a five-game winless string for the Engineers, who now however unbeaten in their last two matches (1-0-1) and improve to 3-2-3 overall. Wentworth falls to 1-5-3 in 2025.
Wentworth had an early look off the foot of David Lemus, however,
Floris Huiskers (Amsterdam, Netherlands) came up with the stop in the four minute of play. Just over two minutes later, off a turnover,
Dylan Michaud () had a look from the top of the box that sailed high. WPI had its first chance in the 16th minute when
Nathan Araujo () went in but
Adrian Sanchez (Chorrera, Panama) kept the game scoreless with a diving save. The Engineers put another shot on net in the 24th minute that Sanchez came up with the stop on.
The Engineers had a pair of corner kicks 21 seconds apart which led to a header shot on the second one that went wide of the mark. Wentworth took a 1-0 lead at the 41:51 mark as
Mustafa Hassan (Lewiston, Maine) tallied his first collegiate goal. Hassan corralled the ball after a long pass and went one on one with a WPI defender. From the top left corner of the box he hooked a shot that went to the top right corner of the net.
Both teams had chances in the early part of the second half but the Leopards held the one-goal edge. However, at the 68:49 mark, WPI evened the score when Francillon scored after being set up in the box by
Geronimo Barroso (Houston, TX) and
Erol Gumus (Montclair, NJ).
Younes Henniche (Burlington, MA) nearly gave the hosts a 2-1 lead when he put a shot on net from the right side that
Brendan Ross (Winchester, MA) saved.
WPI capitalized on a Wentworth turnover at 79:07 when Previte scored on a shot from inside the top right corner of the box with what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Huiskers worked in net for the first 45 minutes, racking up four stops while Ross was credited with his first collegiate victory in goal after entering in the second half. Sanchez made four saves for Wentworth. WPI had a 17-11 shot advantage while the Leopards had the edge on corner kicks 4-3.
The Engineers will enjoy the NEWMAC bye date this weekend and will be back in action a week from tonight on Tuesday, September 30th when they entertain Roger Williams at 6pm on H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium. Wentworth continues with the middle match of a run of three straight non-conference home contests this Thursday, tangling with Lasell at 6pm.
