With the win, WPI, ranked 25 in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25, improves to 10-2 on the season overall and 3-0 in NEWMAC play as the Pride drop to 4-9 and sit at 2-2 in conference action.
The Engineers took advantage of sharpshooting and stifling defense as WPI registered 26 points in the first 7:05 of action while holding the visitors to just one basket. The Crimson and Gray erupted shooting 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point land within the opening minutes led by three treys from Reidy and seven points from
Justin Molen (Newark, DE) as the hosts held Springfield to 1-of-10 from the field early and four turnovers as WPI jumped to a 26-2 lead with 12:55 remaining in the first stanza.
Springfield's
Sean Harrigan (Pittsfield, MA) kickstarted the offense for the visitors with nine points off of his next three looks from beyond the arc as
Zander Robinson (East Hartford, CT) added a three of his own with a jumper from
Josh Hartley (Brooklyn, NY). WPI kept the offense rolling as
Nathan Bledsoe (San Antonio, TX) drilled a three before
Matt Morvillo (Bedford, MA) followed with a layup to push the margin back above 20 midway through the opening half. Reidy continued his blistering pace with another pair of triples, helping WPI close the frame on a dominant run as the Engineers carried a commanding 54–18 lead into the break.
The Crimson and Gray opened the second stanza with an 22-9 spurt stretching the advantage to 53. Springfield found brief success behind Harrigan and Robinson but were kept to just 3-of-13 from beyond the arc and 11-of-26 from the floor overall as the Engineers continued to pour on offensively as
Chris Daniels (Lynnfield, MA),
Tao Schreiber (Pompano Beach, FL),
Ryan Vedovelli (West Springfield, MA) and
Alec Scarborough (Houston, TX) all tacked on points in the second half for the Crimson and Gray. WPI outscored Springfield 45–35 in the second half to close out the convincing 99-53 NEWMAC victory.
Overall, the Engineers enjoyed advantages points in the paint (38-16), second chance points (13-4), fastbreak points (25-4) but were outshined in bench points as Springfield outscored WPI's reserves 39-32. Throughout the afternoon, the Engineers registered 11 different scorers as Reidy finished just one point shy of tying a career-best with 26 points as Molen added 14 points and six boards and
