Waduthanthri and Barton Connect Twice, Lakin Shines as Field Hockey Wins Shootout at Mount Holyoke

South Hadley, MA --- Sanidi Waduthanthri (Hopkinton, MA) scored twice, and WPI field hockey prevailed in a shootout after battling Mount Holyoke to a 2-2 tie through two overtime periods Saturday afternoon. Emma Barton (Hopewell Junction, NY) assisted on both WPI goals as the Engineers earned a hard-fought NEWMAC road victory.

WPI improved to 6-6 overall and 4-1 in NEWMAC play, while Mount Holyoke moved to 9-4 overall and 1-4 in conference action. The contest marked WPI's third NEWMAC game to go to overtime in the previous 15 days, with the Engineers winning all three. Two of those contests, including Saturday's matchup, were decided by shootouts.

WPI struck first in the opening quarter when Waduthanthri converted a feed from Barton at 10:32. Mount Holyoke answered at 20:38 in the second quarter, as MJ Owens (Fairfield, CT) found the back of the cage to even the score at 1-1.

The Lyons took their first lead at 40:29 in the third quarter when Scout Climie (Guilford, CT) scored off an assist from Diane Lee (Boston, MA). Mount Holyoke applied considerable pressure in the period, recording 10 shots and 10 penalty corners.

Waduthanthri brought WPI level at 53:31 in the fourth quarter, again finishing a pass from Barton. Neither team found the net during the two 10-minute overtime periods, sending the contest to a shootout.

In the shootout, Barton scored for WPI, while Climie converted Mount Holyoke's lone successful attempt in the initial round of give. After both teams continued to miss in sudden death, Madeline Chase (Danvers, MA) scored the decisive attempt in the second sudden death round to secure the 2-1 shootout victory for the Engineers.

Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) finished with nine saves for the Crimson and Gray, while Addie Oakes (Guilford, CT) made five stops for Mount Holyoke. The Lyons finished with a 26-18 edge in total shots - 11-7 on goal - and a 17-8 advantage in penalty corners.

WPI wraps up its two-game road trip Tuesday at 4pm, traveling to Bangor, Maine, to take on Husson. The Lyons conclude a three-game homestand by welcoming Hartford to South Hadley for a 6pm matchup.
