Northampton, MA --- Ava Cortis (Medway, MA) scored in the opening quarter, but fifth-seeded WPI field hockey saw its season come to a close with a 2-1 setback to fourth-seeded Smith in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening.

The Engineers finish the season with a 7-11 overall record, while the Bears improve to 9-10 and advance to the NEWMAC Semifinals.

WPI grabbed an early lead at 4:54 of the first quarter when Cortis found the back of the cage off an assist from Violet Westburg (Falmouth, ME). The goal was Cortis' third of the season and gave the Engineers a 1-0 advantage.

Smith pulled even at 31:44 of the third quarter on a goal by Malia Lockhart (Bethlehem, PA). The Bears then scored the eventual game-winner with just 2:45 remaining in regulation, as Anouk Bosket (Jordanstown, Northern Ireland) found the cage at 57:15 to give Smith the 2-1 lead.

WPI goalkeeper Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) finished with 15 saves, marking his seventh double-digit save performance of the season and the 13th of his career. Smith's Iseul Park (Ann Arbor, MI) recorded six stops.
