Box Score 1 Providence, RI --- The WPI baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Johnson & Wales on Saturday, falling 6-2 in the opener before suffering a 3-1 setback in the nightcap. With the losses, WPI moves to 9-4 on the season while Johnson & Wales improves to 4-9.
Game 1 – Johnson & Wales 6, WPI 2 (7 innings)
WPI struck quickly in the top of the first as
Matt Shea (Salem, NH) and
Chuck Cappello (Southboro, MA) delivered back-to-back singles to open the game. After a pair of strikeouts,
Jacob Wiberg (Exeter, NH) came through with a clutch double to right center, driving in both runners to give the Engineers a 2-0 advantage.
Johnson & Wales answered in the bottom half of the inning when
James Dwyer (Needham, MA) singled home a run, trimming the deficit to 2-1. The score remained unchanged through the next three innings as both teams were kept in check.
The Wildcats seized control in the fifth, plating five runs on four hits and taking advantage of a pair of hit batters and a walk.
Ryan Ducey (Ramsey, NJ) delivered a two-run single to give Johnson & Wales the lead before
Justin Hernandez (Framingham, MA) added a two-run single later in the inning.
Jeremy Auren (Framingham, MA) capped the rally with an RBI fielder's choice to make it 6-2.
WPI was limited to five hits on the day, with Cappello collecting two and Wiberg accounting for both RBIs with his first-inning double.
Dominic Monico (Litchfield, NH) took the loss, striking out eight over 4.1 innings.
Brian Riley (Portland, ME) provided effective relief with 1.2 scoreless innings and two strikeouts.

Michael Randazzo (Bryn Mawr, PA) earned the complete-game victory, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out nine and walking none.
Game 2 – Johnson & Wales 3, WPI 1
Johnson & Wales completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory in the nine-inning nightcap, using a two-run third inning to take control.
After a scoreless first two innings, delivered a two-run single down the left field line to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats added an insurance run in the fifth when Ducey singled home
Sam Schoenberg (Holliston, MA) to make it 3-0.
WPI threatened throughout but was limited to four hits in the contest.
Camden Willems (The Woodlands, TX) led the way with two hits while Wiberg added a single and scored the Engineers' lone run.
WPI broke through in the ninth as Wiberg scored on a fielder's choice following a pair of walks, but the rally was cut short.
Joseph Conti (Lincoln, RI) took the loss, allowing two runs over four innings while striking out four.
Sean Murphy (East Taunton, MA) and
Alex Hee (Walpole, MA) combined for four innings of relief, with Hee tossing 3.1 scoreless innings.

Brett Nickerson (Medfield, MA) earned the win with seven shutout innings, scattering three hits.
Michael Cobb (Lincoln, MA) picked up the save despite allowing an unearned run in the ninth.
WPI returns to the field on Wednesday with a 3pm road contest at Salve Regina. Johnson & Wales hosts Roger Williams on Tuesday at 3pm.
