Baldizar Reaches Four Times, Pitchers Combined for 14 Strikeouts, but Baseball Falls to MIT

Northboro, MA --- Visiting MIT scored three runs in the second inning and held WPI off the board until the ninth to claim a 4-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex. The Engineers move to 9-9 (0-5 NEWMAC) on the season, while MIT improves to 7-10 (4-0 NEWMAC) after taking the season series.
 
For WPI, Jacob Wiberg (Exeter, NH) led the offense with two hits, including a pair of doubles. Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, NY) tripled and scored the Engineers' lone run, while Greyson Baldizar (Seekonk, MA) was on base four times after recording a hit and three walks. Zachary Roethlein (Pomfret Center, CT) and Liam Keblin (Newton, MA) both added hits. 
 
Joseph Conti (Lincoln, RI) took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks over 1.1 innings. Alex Hee (Walpole, MA) was strong in relief, striking out eight over 4.2 innings while allowing just one run on four hits. Brian Riley (Portland, ME) and Mason Walls (Pearland, TX) combined for three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out five.
 
MIT was paced by James Dempsey (Grand Rapids, MI), who went 3-for-4 with a triple, double, and two RBI. Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) added a solo home run, while Owen Malone (Portsmouth, RI) doubled and scored a run.
 
Chase Rubin (Arlington, VA) earned the win, tossing 6.1 scoreless innings while allowing five hits and five walks with two strikeouts. Deven Pietrzak (Dallas, TX) recorded two outs in relief, and Malone closed the game with two innings to earn the save.
 
MIT broke through in the second inning, as Malone doubled and John Dwyer (Northport, NY) walked ahead of Dempsey's two-run triple to left center. Dempsey later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
 
WPI threatened early, putting runners on base in each of the first four innings. In the first, Keblin singled and advanced to second, while in the second, Wiberg doubled and moved to third before being stranded. The Engineers loaded the bases in the fourth on hits from Wiberg and Baldizar along with a walk, but a strikeout ended the inning.
 
MIT extended its lead in the fifth when Moore connected for a solo home run to make it 4-0.
 
WPI continued to apply pressure late, including a seventh inning where Baldizar and Roethlein walked and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, but a strikeout ended the threat.
 
The Engineers broke through in the ninth when Zawacki tripled to right center and later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Roethlein. WPI brought the tying run to the plate, but a strikeout ended the game.
 
WPI returns to action tomorrow with a non-conference matchup at Wentworth at 2:00pm. MIT will host Coast
