Northboro, MA --- Visiting Coast Guard broke open a tight game with a five-run fourth to upend the WPI baseball team, 13-5, on Tuesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex. The loss dips the Engineers to 13-17 (2-9 NEWMAC) on the season, while Coast Guard improves to 12-15 (6-7 NEWMAC).
Chuck Cappello (Southboro, MA) paced WPI offensively with four hits, including a home run, and two RBI, while
Jacob Wiberg (Exeter, NH) added two hits and drove in a run.
Miles Pratt (Hampton, NH) recorded two hits and an RBI, and
Jonathan Lattimer (Windsor, CT) contributed two hits as the Engineers totaled 13 hits in the contest.
Dominic Monico (Litchfield, NH) took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings.
Ethan Smith (Hanson, MA) worked 2.2 innings in relief, while
Joseph Conti (Lincoln, RI) and
Kaiden Williams (North Aurora, IL) combined to finish the game on the mound.
Coast Guard was led by
Nate Stafford (Jupiter, FL), who went 4-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBI, including a grand slam in the fourth inning.
Carson Cho (Haymarket, VA) added three hits and scored four runs, while
Max Van Auken (Franklinville, NJ) contributed three hits and an RBI.
Tyler Michalek (Fort Worth, TX) earned the win for the Bears, allowing one run on six hits over three innings before the bullpen combined to limit WPI the rest of the way.
Coast Guard opened the scoring in the first on an RBI single from Stafford before WPI answered in the third when Cappello singled home Pratt to even the game.
The Bears regained the lead later in the third on a sacrifice fly, but WPI responded again in the bottom half as Pratt doubled and later scored on a Cappello RBI single to make it 2-2.
Coast Guard broke the game open in the fourth, highlighted by Stafford's grand slam as part of a five-run inning to take a 7-2 lead.
WPI chipped away in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring on an RBI double by Pratt and a run-scoring single from Wiberg to cut the deficit to 7-5.
However, Coast Guard extended the lead in the sixth with three runs, including another home run from Stafford, and added insurance in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the win.
WPI returns to action on Thursday with a home game against Eastern Connecticut at 3:30pm, while Coast Guard travels to Roger Williams for a non-conference matchup, also on Thursday at 3:30pm.
