WORCESTER -- Grant Engelhardt (Chelmsford, MA) returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown and the WPI defense produced a pair of fourth-quarter goal-line stands as the Engineers held off Husson 13-7 on Saturday afternoon.
 
WPI improves to 2-1 on the season with its second straight victory, while Husson falls to 0-3.
 
After a scoreless opening quarter, Nathan Napier (Natick, MA) put WPI on the board with a 42-yard field goal just nine seconds into the second. Napier added a 25-yarder less than six minutes later to give the Engineers a 6-0 advantage.
 
The WPI defense then provided the game's only touchdown for the hosts. Engelhardt intercepted Husson quarterback Brody Gibson (Indianapolis, IN) at the Husson 29-yard line and returned it all the way for a touchdown. Napier's extra point extended the lead to 13-0 with 8:19 remaining in the first half.
 
Husson answered just before halftime, going 60 yards in four plays and 42 seconds. Gibson connected with Brett Davis (Dover, NH) for a 19-yard touchdown with 27 seconds remaining, trimming WPI's advantage to 13-7 at the break.
 
Neither team scored again as WPI's defense repeatedly came up with stops in its own territory.
 
Pat Andrews (Marlboro, MA) intercepted Gibson late in the third quarter and returned it 19 yards to the WPI 44. The turnover halted a 10-play Husson possession and gave the Engineers their second interception of the afternoon.
 
Husson threatened again with a 17-play, 84-yard drive that consumed 9:42 of the fourth quarter. The Hawks reached the WPI four-yard line and eventually faced fourth-and-goal from the one, where Daniel Ruiz Cantu (San Pedro Garza Garcia, Mexico) was stopped for a two-yard loss by Engelhardt and Michael Hughes (Marshville, NC).
 
The Hawks got one final opportunity and again drove deep into WPI territory in the closing minutes. After reaching the three-yard line, Hughes sacked Gibson for an 11-yard loss on third down. Jake Robertson (Grafton, MA) then broke up Gibson's fourth-down pass in the end zone with 10 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
 
Engelhardt finished with eight tackles to go along with his 29-yard interception return for a touchdown and the shared tackle for loss on Husson's fourth-and-goal attempt. Andrews and Carter Learned (Reading, MA) shared the team lead with nine tackles apiece, while Michael Doherty (Woburn, MA) added eight stops. Robertson recorded seven tackles and three pass breakups, and Kellen LaChapelle (Uxbridge, MA) contributed six tackles and three pass breakups.
 
Offensively, Dylan Gallo (Maynard, MA) completed 17-of-32 passes for 196 yards without an interception. Garrett Ranieri (Templeton, MA) was his top target with seven receptions for 79 yards, while Ethan Frisch (Clinton, MA) caught two passes for 47 yards, including a 42-yard reception on WPI's final possession of the first half. Josh Macomber (Bethel, CT) led the Engineers on the ground with 20 yards on 11 carries and added two receptions for 25 yards.
 
Napier accounted for seven of WPI's 13 points, converting field goals from 42 and 25 yards and adding the extra point following Engelhardt's touchdown.
 
Gibson finished 25-of-42 for 204 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions for Husson. Jacob Lenz (Ledyard, CT) caught seven passes for 81 yards, while Davis totaled seven receptions for 44 yards and the Hawks' lone touchdown. Anthony Santacroce (Groton, CT) led all rushers with 57 yards on 16 carries.
 
WPI opens NEWMAC play next Saturday, traveling to Coast Guard for a 1pm kickoff. Husson begins Conference of New England action the same day with a noon contest at Endicott.
