WORCESTER --
Abigail Marsolais (Norton, MA) made two saves to record her first career clean sheet, while
Olivia King (Simsbury, CT) turned aside six shots as Women's Soccer and Wheaton battled to a scoreless draw Monday evening at H.Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.
The Engineers move to 4-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in NEWMAC play, while the Lyons are now 3-2-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in conference action.
WPI controlled much of the early possession but could not find the breakthrough.
Caila Scully (Merrimack, NH) headed a fifth-minute attempt wide before
Katie Adiletta (Bolton, MA) forced King to make a save in the seventh minute. The Lyons generated several chances of their own, including a header by
Emma-Jane Parsons (Oakland, ME) that was blocked and attempts by
Maya Thomas (Goffstown, NH) and
Kate Rafferty (Westerly, RI) that missed the frame. Wheaton finished the opening half with a 7-4 advantage in shots, but neither side found the back of the net.
The second half featured chances at both ends as WPI outshot the Lyons 11-9. Marsolais denied
Camila Leiva (Warwick, RI) on a shot from the right side of the box in the 58th minute, while King stopped Adiletta's attempt from outside the box less than two minutes later. Adiletta later sent a shot just over the crossbar from the left side of the 18-yard box, while
Karina Contreras (Pawtucket, RI) missed high on a chance from inside the box. The Engineers continued to press late, with
Jess English (Ledyard, CT) forcing a save from King off a corner in the 85th minute and Adiletta testing the Wheaton keeper again moments later. The Lyons nearly broke through in the final minute when
Alex Dore (Merion Station, PA) struck the crossbar from roughly 30 yards before sending a follow-up attempt high.
Marsolais finished with two saves for her first career clean sheet, while King recorded six stops for Wheaton. The Engineers registered 15 shots and six shots on goal, with Adiletta leading the way with six shots and four on target. Wheaton finished with 16 shots, though only two reached the frame. Both teams earned four corner kicks.
The Engineers continue NEWMAC play Saturday, welcoming Mount Holyoke to Worcester for a noon kickoff. Wheaton is back on the pitch Wednesday, hosting Fitchburg State at 4pm.
