WORCESTER --
Caroline Coletti (Carlisle, MA) registered a pair of goals, while
Emma Darling (Weston, MA) chipped in with a goal and an assist to lift visiting Amherst to a 4-2 triumph over WPI in a non-conference women's soccer contest Wednesday evening on H.Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.
With the result, Amherst evens its record at 1-1 on the young season, while the Engineers dip to 1-3 overall.
The game started at a frantic pace as Amherst struck first on a corner kick in the sixth minute. Coletti played it short to Darling, who quickly returned the ball to Coletti. The junior dribbled into the penalty area and fired inside the short post at 5:39 to put the visitors ahead 1-0. WPI answered just over three minutes later.
Abigail Johnson (Middletown, CT) played a ball from the left side to
Maeve Steckley (Irondequoit, NY), who sent a cross into the box for
Aliza Margolis (Wakefield, MA). Margolis volleyed inside the far post at 8:58 for her first career goal.
Amherst regained the lead in the 18th minute, with
Katie Pedersen (Mercer Island, WA) playing a corner to the upper left corner of the box, where Coletti drilled her second goal of the night into the back of the net at 17:52. The Mammoths added another goal with 5:48 remaining before halftime.
Becca Button (San Francisco, CA) played a ball to
Allison Hayes (Burlington, CT) in the left corner, and Hayes slipped it to
Maddy Sutton (Leesburg, VA), who tucked it past the goal line before a WPI defender could clear it for her first career goal.
WPI pulled one back nearly midway through the second half off a corner of its own. Johnson delivered the corner just past the front post, and it was redirected into the net by
Sarah Frye (Nashua, NH) for the rookie's first career goal at 63:49. The visitors regained their two-goal cushion with 7:15 remaining when Darling buried a feed from
Millie McLeod (Atlanta, GA) to close out the scoring.
Ayla Verheul (Naarden, The Netherlands) and
Abigail Marsolais (Norton, MA) split the game in net for the hosts. Verheul was credited with three saves in the opening half, while Marsolis turned away one shot in the final 45 minutes.
Molly Davidson (Watertown, NY) went the distance for the Mammoths, making five stops on the night.
Amherst held a 21-9 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
WPI steps out of conference play for its next contest, heading to UMass Boston for a noon kickoff on Saturday. Amherst returns to action at the same time, hosting Bowdoin in a NESCAC affair.
