Ed Cannon, your accomplishments on the soccer field and
basketball court are among the most memorable in WPI's athletic
annals, for not only did you gain fame individually and for WPI
with your individual feats, you inspired your teammates to reach
for and attain their maximum potential.
As a forward on the soccer team, you were not only a great
scorer, but the catalyst that enabled your team compile the best
four-year record in WPI history. Your teams lost but five of 44
games you played in, and twice you led the team to the ultimate in
team recognition - an invitation to play in the NCAA Championship
Tournament. As a capstone to your career, you were named an
All-American in both the 1967 and 1968 seasons, when just 33
players, regardless of division, received that honor across the
country.
Your abilities as an inspirational team leader were also evident
in basketball where as a guard, you led WPI to one of its greatest
victories ever, a championship game win over Division II powerhouse
Assumption in the Worcester Holiday Tournament in 1967. Again you
rose to the occasion and were rewarded with All-Tournament
honors.
Your exceptional involvement in athletics and constant pursuit
of excellence has continued since your graduation from WPI. Today,
as the assistant athletic director and highly-successful soccer
coach at St. Anselms College, you are widely recognized leader in
intercollegiate athletics in New England.
Ed Cannon, it is with great pride that we induct you into the
WPI Athletic Hall of Fame as a charter member.
