Ray Forkey, your remarkable contributions to WPI athletics have
spanned more than 40 years. Your accomplishments started as a
freshman and concluded as a senior when you became the first WPI
athlete to earn 12 letters - in football, basketball and baseball.
Along the way you were an integral part of some of the most
successful Engineer teams in history and as an alumnus your staunch
support of WPI and the athletic program rivals your efforts as an
athlete.
Your record of playing in all but one varsity game, in all three
sports, for four years, is testimony to your skill, drive and
determination. In football your ability and poise as a triple
threat quarterback made you an invaluable leader on the 1938
undefeated team, where as a passer, runner and especially a punter
you became a legend in your own time. On the basketball court, you
played both guard and center, captained the team in your senior
year, and helped the Engineers compile a 47-17 record, the best
basketball career record in WPI history.
Included in that basketball record was the 13-3 team of 1938-39,
which had the best record in New England. You also captained the
baseball team, where you played first base and shortstop and were
an outstanding hitter.
Since graduation you have continued to bring pride to WPI
through your accomplishments on the golf course where you
consistently low handicap and fierce competitive spirit are legend.
In addition, as a totally committed alumnus and Trustee, you have
consistently been in the forefront in keeping athletics a prominent
part of the WPI experience.
Ray Forkey, it is worth gratitude and admiration that we
recognize you this evening with your induction as a charter member
of the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
