Bob Pritchard, teacher, counselor and coach, devoted most of his
life to WPI and to the betterment of college athletics everywhere.
His name was synonymous with WPI athletics for 32 years and
influenced thousands of lives during that period. Under his
guidance as athletic director for 26 years the physical education
and athletic departments were continually recognized for their
style, quality and success.
Bob Pritchard's commitment to young people did not end with his
responsibilities at WPI. He was extremely proud of his role as
founder and chairman of the National Collegiate Athletic
Association's Drug Education Committee and its success in
combatting the use of drugs by college athletes.
As football coach from 1947 to 1966 he has the most victories
(60) of any head coach in the college's history. His undefeated
1954 team, widely recognized as the most dominating WPI team ever,
earned him national recognition and a "Coach of the Year"
nomination.
Bob's achievements and recognition are as numerous as they are
legend. He was instrumental in the planning and development of
Harrington Auditorium; he was inducted into both the Susquehanna
University and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of
Athletic Halls of Fame; and his recent selection as the recipient
of the coveted Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference's James Lynah
Award as a "Person who has made more than the usual contribution in
the interest of intercollegiate athletics" continues the Bob
Pritchard legacy.
His drive and commitment will endure. His accomplishments as
athletic director, coach and as a real person will never be
overshadowed.
Tonight we honor Bob Pritchard's extraordinary life with his
posthumous induction as a charter member of the WPI Athletic Hall
of Fame.
