Dave McEwan, your athletic accomplishments at WPI are among the
most storied in the Institute's long and illustrious history.
A three-sport performer and winner of 12 varsity letters, you were
an integral member of successful soccer, basketball, and golf teams
at WPI, and your leadership abilities earned you the unique
distinction of a three-sport captain.
Your unparalleled soccer skills were obvious the moment you
arrived at WPI, for you were only one of two freshmen to earn a
varsity letter in 1935. A prolific scorer, you earned
All-America and All-New England honors in 1938 while leading the
Engineers to an undefeated 6-0 record. Your 14 goals that
season included a spectacular four-goal effort against Tufts.
Your play during your brilliant career was described as a "brand of
soccer that hasn't been seen on Tech's field for many years."
A truly versatile athlete, in basketball you helped WPI
accumulate an impressive 44-17 record during your four year career
and were the team's leading scorer as a junior. During your
senior year, you were a major factor behind the sparkling 1938-39
season when WPI finished 13-3 and second in New England.
A captain on the golf team also, your remarkable involvement at
WPI wasn't confined to athletics. You were highly involved in
student and fraternal affairs and were a respected leader
throughout the campus community.
David McEwan, tonight we proudly honor you for your conspicuous
achievements at WPI by inducting you as a member of the WPI
Athletic Hall of Fame.
