Don Lutz, your multiple talents earned you distinction as a
member of the basketball, soccer, and baseball teams at WPI. Your
spirit, dedication and abilities carried you to 10 varsity letters
and the Outstanding Athlete Award in 1967.
As point-guard on the basketball team, your consistent scoring
ability and floor leadership earned you All-New England honors, and
you were elected co-captain of the squad in your senior year. With
1,212 career points, you presently rank fifth among the all-time
leading scorers at WPI.
The superb aptitude you displayed on the basketball court was
also present on the soccer field, where you were the star
goaltender despite never playing soccer before your sophomore year
at WPI. A winner of two letters, you played an integral role in the
Engineers' undefeated 10-0-1 season in 1965.
In baseball, your offensive and defensive capabilities were
phenomenal. You earned four baseball letters and are classified as
one of the greatest players ever to set foot upon the WPI diamond.
A defensive stalwart in center field, your powerful arm and
tremendous range made you the catalyst of the Engineer defense.
Always quiet and humble, yet always a leader, you served as
class vice-president and president of the WPI Athletic Association
and were elected to Skull. Your exceptional involvement in all
facets of campus life enhanced your position as a leader both on
and off the playing field.
Don Lutz, it is with great pride and distinction that tonight we
honor you with your induction as a member of the WPI Athletic Hall
of Fame.
