Earl Bloom, your magnificent athletic achievements
enable you to be recognized as one of the greatest athletes ever to
wear the Crimson and Gray. Your 15 varsity letters in four years
are the most ever earned by a WPI athlete and distinguishes you as
the most decorated athlete in WPI history.
The epitome of an "all-around" athlete, your success in
football, basketball, track, and tennis was a tribute to your
remarkable talent, drive and leadership.
You will always be remembered for the instrumental role you
played on the 1954 football team. A dynamic running back, safety,
and kicker, your immense abilities and timely scoring helped WPI
achieve only its second perfect season ever.
On the basketball court, your dazzling play during four
outstanding seasons saw you and your distinguished career with 584
points. Your heroics were numerous, but perhaps most memorable was
when you keyed WPI's monumental victory over Massachusetts in 1954
by scoring the winning basket with just four seconds remaining in
the game.
Your poise and phenomenal abilities were also evident in track
and tennis. A multi-faceted performer, you ran sprints and
performed both the high jump and long jump in track. In tennis, you
successfully played both singles and doubles.
Alongside your athletic pursuits, you demonstrated a unique
balance of campus leadership and fraternal involvement. Ever quiet,
yet ever motivated, you were and still are recognized as a true
leader. Earl Bloom, tonight we proudly honor you for your
extraordinary athletic achievements and induct you as a member of
the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
