Alan King, for three decades you have been the driving force in
men's soccer at WPI - committing your time, energy and enthusiasm
toward making the Engineers a force to be contended with in New
England. You have compiled an impressive 199-131-29 record and, in
your 31st season, you can look forward to achieving that milestone
victory. During the course of your career with WPI, you have
coached the soccer team into seven NCAA regional playoffs and
spurred four teams on to New England Intercollegiate Soccer League
(NEISL) championships. You have also coached a successful varsity
tennis program.
Your dedication to athletics has deep roots, beginning in
England as a teenager. You have had a long, successful career in
professional soccer, spanning 25 years and three continents. You
were part of the Singapore Club that won the 1951 Malaysian title.
Four years later, you were a member of the victorious Eintrach
Sport Club of New York, winning the U.S. championship. You have
competed in 14 different sports, winning medals or trophies in 10
of them.
Your experience and enthusiasm reach far beyond the soccer
field. You have encouraged your players to be the best they can be
- on and off the playing field. As a result, seven players have
earned All-American honors and you have been voted Coach of the
Year four times by your fellow collegiate coaches. You have been
the president of the NEISL and have served on the NCAA Soccer Rules
Committee.
Alan King, coach and role model, it is with great pride that WPI
honors you and your achievements - past, present, and future - with
your induction as a member of the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
