Harry "The Horse" Melden, your remarkable athletic achievements
and personal contributions to WPI are among the most storied in the
school's history.
Always a leader, you captained the WPI football team as a junior
in the fall of 1947, Tech's first official season since 1943. As
co-captain the following year, you were a tower of strength on the
line and your efforts as linebacker and tackle were instrumental in
the Engineers' first post-World War II victory, a 19 to 6 victory
over American International College.
Your solid blocking helped the WPI backs rack up 293 rushing
yards in that game and, repeatedly smothering passers before they
could get the ball in the air, you helped nullify seven passes
attempts by the Aces.
Your rugged style made you a leader on the field and earned you
the respect of your teammates and coaches. Your football knowledge,
natural instincts and competitive drive made you a welcome addition
to the coaching staff upon your graduation, as you helped keep
athletics alive at WPI.
Your pursuit of excellence continued off the field. A member of
Skull, you also found time to serve as class treasurer and as a
member of the Athletic Council, the Nautical Association and the
staff of "Tech News." And, you made a lasting mark on WPI Athletics
as one of the founding members of the WPI Poly Club.
Harry Melden, tonight we proudly honor you for your
extraordinary athletic achievements and leadership ability with
your induction into the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
