Roy Bourgault, for thirty years you have given your time, energy
and enthusiasm unfailingly to the support of athletics at WPI. You
have been an unsung hero of Engineer football, giving countless
hours every week, both on season and off, to film each football
game and scrimmage, and to review those tapes with coaches. In
1977, you assisted in the effort to save WPI football after 90
seasons. Your influence and leadership helped to bring several
hundred students out on a snowy day to support the program.
For 25 years you officiated Shot and Discus events for WPI track
meets. All the while you continued your teaching and research
responsibilities as a professor of mechanical engineering. You have
also been a dedicated Boy Scout master, often going right from a
game or meet to a Scout function.
Your commitment to WPI athletics reaches beyond the camera lens
and the playing field. As a freshman in the class of 1942, you were
a member of the swimming team. In 1974, you served as secretary to
the WPI Trustees' Committee on Athletics. The following year you
began your 12-year relationship with the WPI Athletic Council,
through which you served on the selection committee of the current
football and men's basketball coaches.
The time and energy you have given have not gone unnoticed-by
students, fellow faculty members or administrators. You were
elected to serve two three-year terms as secretary of the WPI
faculty and were elected to Skull, the senior honor society, in
1976. In December 1985, WPI named you professor emeritus in
mechanical engineering.
Roy Bourgault, in recognition of your long standing support of
WPI athletics, it is both an honor and a pleasure to induct you
into the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
