Tim Rooney, your remarkable athletic achievements and
unrelenting personal drive have made you one of WPI's most
memorable athletes.
You were the epitome of the all-round athlete and the first
four-time sports captain in the history of the college. In your
junior year you captained the varsity basketball team; in your
senior year your teammates recognized your quiet, effective
leadership abilities and elected you to lead the soccer, basketball
and baseball teams.
At 5'8" you were not a physical giant, but you stood tall on the
court and in the field as you averaged 16 points a game in
basketball in your junior and senior years, helped your soccer
teammates kick their way to four truly successful seasons and, as a
second baseman, you were the glue that held the baseball infield
together.
You were recognized by more than your teammates. You were a
three-year member of the All-New England Soccer Team, and during
your senior year you were selected baseball MVP and WPI's
outstanding senior athlete by the coaches from these areas.
Your style was quiet, but firm - active, but not showy. Your
strength touched almost every aspect of the WPI community. You were
elected to Skull and named to Who's Who in American Colleges
and Universities.
Tim Rooney, tonight it is with much respect and admiration that
we honor you and your distinguished collegiate athletic career by
inducting you into the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
