James Buell, you left a mark on WPI athletics that will long be
remembered. You played on the football team at a time when the
Engineers won only ten games in four years. Still, your acrobatic
talent and determination made you one of the greatest wide
receivers to grace the halls of WPI.
A football tri-captain in your senior year, you were rated one
of the ten best receivers in New England. By twisting and turning
your body and hands, you could pull in just about any ball thrown
your way. Against Coast Guard in 1971, you caught a school record
13 passes for 183 yards, and scored a touchdown despite being
double- and triple-teamed. Three touchdown receptions against Bates
College in 1972 earned you a spot on the Bates All-Opponent Team.
In all, you caught 77 passes for 1,143 yard and eleven touchdowns.
On the baseball team, you anchored the infield for three years
at shortstop and served as team co-captain in your senior year. In
a 3-1 victory over Hartford in 1973, you drove in the winning run;
you were responsible for four of the six runs WPI scored in a
victory over Northeastern. For your heroics, you were named a
co-winner of the Varsity Club Award, recognizing you as one of the
WPI's most outstanding athletes of 1973.
