Catherine Murray, you were truly an athlete for all seasons
during your years at WPI. You accumulated 10 varsity letters in the
sports of basketball, field hockey, and softball, while also
finding time to participate on th women's club soccer team and the
outdoor track and field team.
You helped lead the basketball team to the ECAC championship in
1986-87. Your athletic memories also include a soccer game against
Bridgewater State College, during which you made more than 60 saves
as goalie. Your talent and dedication won you the support of your
teammates, who elected you captain of the basketball team in 1985
and tri-captain in 1986; co-captain of the field hockey team in
1986; and co-captain of the softball team in 1987.
On the basketball court, you scored a remarkable 1,081 career
points, while dishing out 641 assists and grabbing 323 rebounds as
a point guard. you still hold the single-game assist record with
eight. Those statistics rank among the best all-time records in
women's basketball at WPI.
In 1987 you were named to the All-American New England
basketball second team, the New England Women's Basketball
Association All-star second team, and the Worcester Tip-Off Classic
all-tourney team. You were a member of an ECAC championship team,
and in 1984 you played on the only women's basketball team to play
in the NCAA tournament. Your achievements on the court earned you
spots on the ECAC and NEWMA honor rolls several times during your
WPI career.
In field hockey, you were named a member of th 1986 state
tourament all-tourney team and were a member of th WPI team that
won the ECAC championship in 1986. Your athletic accomplishments
won you the WPI Coaches Award in 1983 and the Varsity Club Award in
1987.
Your record of achievement extended beyond the field. You were
elected to the Tau Beta Pi honor society and the Pi Tau Sigma
mechanical engineering honor society. In 1987, you won the ASM
Outstanding MQP Award. You were also vice president of varsity
club. While working on a master;s degree in materials engineering,
which you received from WPI in 1990, you worked at the Institute as
an assistant softball coach.
Catherine Murray, for your dedication and contributions to WPI
athletics, it is our honor to recognize you as a member of the WPI
Athletic Hall of Fame.
