Joseph Bronzino, as an athlete at WPI you were a force to be
reckoned with. On the baseball diamond your prowess with the bat
earned you a reputation as the team's "big gun." And on the
gridiron your tenacity and toughness made you the player Coach
Pritchard could depend on to gain the last few yards for a first
down or a touchdown. In all, you earned seven varsity letters in
those two sports during your four years at WPI.
You joined the varsity football team as a freshman, became a
starter in the backfield as a junior, and co-captained the team as
a senior. As a tough-running fullback, you led the Engineers to a
6-1 record as a senior. You had the team's best scoring record in
your junior and senior years, and chalked up an impressive 78
career points. Your outstanding play during your senior year earned
you a spot on the All-East second team.
In baseball, you were the starting centerfielder for all four of
your WPI seasons and you served the team as co-captain your senior
year. You led the team in hitting as a freshman and a junior,
recording a .361 average and a .457 average, respectively. You were
the first player to hit a home run over the newly constructed fence
in left field. In the summer of 1956, you were selected to play on
the New York City Journal American All-star Team, which
defeated a team of U.S. All Stars 5-3 at the Polo Grounds.
Your excellence was not limited to the playing fields. An
electrical engineering major, you were elected to the Tau Beta Pi
and Eta Kappa Nu honor societies and were named president of Skull.
You served your class as vice president your senior year and were
president of the Athletic Council. Your scholarships and athletic
accomplishments won you the Outstanding Senior Award from the
Varsity Club. After receiving your WPI degree, you went on to earn
a master's from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Ph.d. from your
alma mater. SInce then you have had a distinguished career as an
educator and researcher in biomedical engineering and Trinity
College in Hartford, where today you are the Vernon Roosa Professor
of Applied Science.
Joseph Bronzino, for your tremendous accomplishments on and off
the playing field, we are proud to welcome you to membership in the
WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
