Cindy Perkins, when the roster of WPI's greatest women
basketball players is posted someday, your name will be there. As a
four-year letter-winner, you excelled in every aspect of the game
and were one of the best players in New England. Over those four
years, you scored 1,370 points, making you one of WPI's all-time
leading scorers. The 1,000 rebounds you chalked up place you among
the leaders in that category, as well. But you were not merely a
leader, you were a pioneer, becoming only the second player-man or
woman-at WPI to reach the 1,000 mark in points and rebounds.
During your first season as a WPI basketball player, your hard
work and talent earned you the title "ECAC Rookie of the Week."
That was just the first of many honors you would win as you help
propel your team to four winning seasons, an NCAA tournament
appearance in 1983-84, and an ECAC New England tournament win in
1987. As a sophomore, you were a New England Women's Basketball
Association All-Star Honorable Mention and an NCAA Third-Team
All-American. That year you were the MVP of the Regis College
Tournament and were named twice to the ECAC Honor Roll.
As a junior, you continued your impressive record of
achievement, recording 17 points and 17 rebounds in a game against
Coast Guard and 20 points and 16 rebounds in a game with Trinity.
You were also named to the Colby Invitational All-Tournament Team
that year. In your final season of play, you scored your 1,000th
point in a game against Clark University in the Worcester City
Tip-Off tournament, a tournament WPI won. You also earned a spot on
the All-Tournament Team.
Your accomplishments as an athlete extended beyond the
basketball court. You also won two letters in track and field, and
you were the ECAC hammer champion in 1986. The following year you
threw the hammer 140 feet during a meet, setting a school record
that still stands.
Your achievements as a student-athlete often attracted the
attention of the new media. As an assistant in the Sports
Information Office for three years, you helped make sure that your
fellow WPI athletes received their moments in the sun, as well.
Cindy Perkins, it is with great pride that we honor you tonight
as one of the newest members of the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
