Gregg Fiddes, you were half of one of the greatest duos to ever
burn up the backcourt in Harrington Auditorium. With fellow Hall of
Fame member Orville Bailey '85, you helped lead the Institute to
one of its greatest basketball seasons ever. During 1984-85, with
you as team tri-captain, the Engineers won the Northeast Regional
Championship and advanced to the final eight in the Division III
national tournament.
On the court you were a talented and consistent player. You
scored 1,392 points over your four letter-winning WPI season as
point guard, making you the fourth highest scorer in WPI history.
Your record for assists (359) ranks you second in that category.
And you hold the record for the most free throws attempted and the
most completed in a WPI career, with 432 and 580, respectively. One
of those successful free throws won a game against Albany State in
the 1984-84 regional semifinal competition.
Your performances on the court earned you a number of honors.
During the 1983-84 season, you were named to the All-Tournament
Team for the Worcester City Tip-Off Tournament. The following year
you were named to the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship
All-Tournament Team.
You were a highly celebrated schoolboy student-athlete for both
Bartlett High School and Holy Name High in Massachusetts. At
Bartlett, you steered your team to the 1978-’79 Massachusetts
Division III State Championship with a remarkable run to the
championship. Your winning full-court drive to the basket
against powerhouse Charlestown High advanced your team to the
finals where Bartlett dismantled a deep and talented Cathedral
Catholic squad. At Holy Name, you teamed with later Villanova
University star and NBA player, Dwayne McClain to lead Holy Name to
runner up in the 1980-’81 Massachusetts Division I State
Championship at the Boston Garden - losing only that season to
Patrick Ewing’s powerhouse Cambridge Rindge and Latin
team. Despite multiple college offers, you choose WPI for its
superior academic reputation and athletic offerings which has
served you very well.
Gregg Fiddes, it is with a sense of pride and satisfaction that
we welcome you to membership in the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
