Carl Simon, as a student during the war years, you excelled at
WPI in the classroom and on the playing field. You earned seven
varsity letters while playing football, basketball and baseball
between 1943 and 1945.
On the gridiron you were a two-way player, leading the offense
at quaterback and switching over to linebacker for the defense. In
1943 you helped lead WPI to a 13-0 victory over the famed Crimson
of Harvard.
In the winter, you were a member of the basketball team and
played alongside hall-of-famer Charles Schmit. During your freshman
season, the squad compiled a 13-2 record, which made it one of the
most successful teams in WPI history. Over a three-year period you
helped the university to a 25-19 overall record.
Off the playing fields you achieved further successes. You were
valedictorian for your Manchester (N.H.) Wst High class. By the
time of your WPI graduation, you were ranked third in your class
and you earned your mechanical engineering degree with high
distinction.
You served your classmates well as president all four of your
WPI years, and were inducted into Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi and Skull.
You received the Freshman Skull Trophy Award and were president of
the Athletic Council in your senior year. After graduation, you
served your country as a navy battalion commander from 1943 to
1945.
Carl Simon, for your commitment to excellence and devotion to
your fellow students and country, it is with great honor that we
welcome you into the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
