David Durrenburger, you are among the legends of WPI track and
field. A four-year letterwinner, you still hold the university's
javelin record of 209 feet 3.25 inches. As the dominant thrower in
New England Division III, you were crowned champion in both your
junior and senior years. In 1987 you helped lead WPI to the
Dicision III NEw England Championship. The following year you
attained All-New England status.
During your first trip to the Nationals as a junior, a fellow
competitor needed the use of your javelin and you obliged in a show
of sportsmanship. While this competitor edged you out for
All-America honors, you made no waves and accepted the challenge to
reach even higher the following year. In fact, the next year you
rose to the occasion and made All-America. In the words of
Coach Merl Norcross, you were "a hard worker who prepared for the
javelin all year long, and a great competitor who inspired other
javelin throwers."
You graduated from WPI with high distinction and were inducted
into Pi Tau Sigma, the mechanical engineering honor society. You
are currently marketing manager for Pa-Ted Spring Co., Inc, in
Bristol, Conn.
David Durrenburger, for your athletic achievements and
sportsmanship and for inspiring other to greatness, it is with
great pride and satisfaction that we welcome you to membership in
the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
