Sue Chapman, you will long be remembered as one of the pioneers
in women's athletics at WPI. After women were first admitted to WPI
in the late 1960's, you were there to develop and nurture a women's
athletics program. Over the years, you brought honor and
distinction upon yourself and our athletes as they achieved
excellence on the playing fields and in the classroom.
During your tenure, from 1975 to 1987, you established a winning
tradition as a coach of field hockey and basketball. Your records
of 123-62 in basketball and 101-36-6 in field hockey remain the
university's best. No one has matched your back-to-back 20-win
season in field hockey. You guided both teams to the AIAW and NCAA
tournaments and were selected New England Coach of the Year by the
New England Women's Basketball Association and the American Women's
Sports Federation in 1983-84. Your comittment to women's athletics
went beyond WPI as you served on many regional and national
committees in pursuit of more opportunities for women to compete.
You also found time to serve professional organizations designed to
bring recognition to women's athletics.
At WPI, you demonstrated that same desire to help as you served
as an advisor for a number of students projects. Your devotion to
students won you induction into Skull in 1980.
Your professional career has taken you to Worcester State
College, where you continue to serve as a role model for students.
Your tireless efforts to develop and build a successful program has
brought you much respect from your peers.
Sue Chapman, a pioneer for women's athletics at WPI, it is
indeed an honor to induct you into the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
