Amaro Goncalves, during you WPI career, you established yourself
as one of the best soccer players, not only at the university but
in America. Your prowess on the field earned you an enviable array
of honors.
A four-year letter-winner at WPI, you were also named the team's
Most Valuable Player. You were a two-time All-American (First Team
as a senior, Second Team as a junior) from the sweeper position and
a two-time All-New England First team selection and All-Star
during your junior and senior years.
As team captain, you inspired your teammates with your
leadership and your own passion for the game. they knew how much
you cared about the team, and they didn't want to let you down. You
also led by example. You were never satisfied with a victory; you
were always looking to the next game and the next chance to prove
yourself. Says Coach Alan King, "Amaro was an outstanding leader
for us. He was a focused player who would fight to the end."
You love of the game spilled over to other young people,
for you always found time to teach or to pass on to other players
the skills you'd learned and the knowledge of the game that was
yours alone.
You graduated with honors from WPI as a management major. Your
current position as Executive Director of International Sales and
Marketing at Col's Manufacturing Company has allowed you to
continue your excellence.
Amaro Goncalves, today we recognize your enduring contributions
to soccer and to WPI by inducting you into the WPI Athletic Hall of
Fame.
