Daniel Pond, you were an outstanding track man during your four
years at WPI. From your very first season as a high hurdler, you
established yourself as a force in New England. On your way to
earning four varsity letters, you captured the Worcester City title
in the high hurdles all four years, qualified for the NCAA
Championships in the high hurdles three times, and were New England
Division III champion as a sophomore and junior. While winning your
second title, you also set a New England record. You hold the WPI
record of 14.66 seconds which you set in 1985.
During 14 duals meets, you were surpassed only once in the high
hurdles, and that was by a teammate. You also competed in the high
jump and triple jump, demonstrating your competitive spirit by
frequently winning those events.
You won the city title in both events; and won the triple jump
as a freshman and the high jump as a senior.
Says Coach Merl Norcross, "Dan was a big, strong hurdler who
worked hard at achieving success. He was quiet, but I always
counted on him to win, and he did."
When you weren't winning meets and titles, you were a loyal
member of Zeta Psi fraternity. With your degree from WPI, you've
charted a rewarding career in electrical engineering, a career that
has brought you to Redstone Communications, where you are principal
hardware engineer.
Dan Pond, for your accomplishments as a member of the track and
field team and for the honor you brought this University, it is
with great pride that we welcome you into the WPI Athletic Hall of
Fame.
