Allen Hoffman, if consistency is a model of achievement, then
you must be considered an overachiever. One of the finest cross
country runners in WPI history, tonight you receive the recognition
that you so richly deserve.
Currently a professor of mechanical engineering at WPI, you have
been on campus since the fall of 1959, when you first arrived as a
freshman following a successful career at Lunenburg (Mass.) High
School. Since then, you have been an undergraduate, a graduate
student and a faculty member, as well as finding the time to serve
as assistant coach (1972 to 1974) and head coach (1975 and 1976) of
the cross country team.
As a student, you lettered in cress country and track in 1960,
1961 and 1962; you won another track letter in 1963. You
co-captained both teams your senior year, and were a member of
WPI's indoor track team for three years.
It was during your senior year that you truly excelled in cross
country. You ran in 11 meets, winning seven, and were WPI's top
finisher in all 11. You finished second in the EICAA Cross Country
Meet in 1962, having finished fourth in the same meet a year
earlier. In track, later that spring, you became a consistent
place-finisher for the Engineers in both the one- and two-mile
events, postings two wins in the latter. The year before, you
placed fourth at the Easterns in the mile run.
You were a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, where you were
the recording secretary as a senior. You were also a member of the
Varsity Club and Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma honor societies. As a
faculty member, you have received WPI's Trustees Award for
Outstanding Creative Scholarship and Research (1988). A resident of
Sterling, Mass, you are still involved on the running circuit.
Allen Hoffman, superior athlete and loyal graduate, it is with
honor that WPI welcomes you to the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
